Articles (Artikel) — The Constant Companions 🤝

Articles clarify the gender and case of a noun. There are definite articles (der, die, das) representing 'the', and indefinite articles (ein, eine) representing 'a/an'. Because nouns themselves rarely change, the article does the heavy lifting of showing the grammatical case.

Infographic showcasing German Definite (The) and Indefinite (A/An) Articles and their importance.

Articles are the little words that come before nouns.
In German, they are super important because they carry the Gender and Case information.
Without them, you don't know who is doing what to whom.

1. Definite Articles (The) 🎯

When you are talking about a specific thing.

  • Der Mann (The man - Masc)
  • Die Frau (The woman - Fem)
  • Das Kind (The child - Neut)
  • Die Kinder (The children - Plural)

[!CAUTION]
Plural is always DIE!
No matter what the gender was in singular.

  • Der Hund -> Die Hunde
  • Das Auto -> Die Autos

2. Indefinite Articles (A/An) 🤷

When you are talking about any thing, not a specific one.

  • Ein Mann (A man)
  • Eine Frau (A woman)
  • Ein Kind (A child)

Note: Ein is used for both Masculine and Neuter!

3. Negative Articles (Kein) 🚫

German has a special word for "Not a". It matches Ein.

  • Ich habe ein Auto. -> Ich habe kein Auto. (I have no car).
  • Ich habe eine Katze. -> Ich habe keine Katze.

4. The Change (Declension) 📉

Articles change when the Case changes. This is how German marks the role in the sentence.

  • Der Mann (Nom) isst den Apfel (Acc).
  • Die Frau (Nom) hilft dem Kind (Dat).

5. The Zero Article (Nullartikel) 👻

Sometimes, we use NO article at all.

  1. Profession/Nationality: Ich bin Arzt. (I am [a] doctor). Er ist Deutscher.
  2. Uncountable Substances: Ich trinke Wasser. (Not Das Wasser). Ich mag Reis.
  3. Cities/Countries: Ich wohne in Berlin. (Exceptions: Die Schweiz, Die Türkei).
  4. Abstract Concepts: Ich habe Hunger. (I have hunger). Ich habe Angst.

Ich wohne in Berlin und trinke gerne Bier. (No articles!).
