Future I (Futur I) — The Prediction 🔮

Future I is formed using the conjugated auxiliary verb werden in position 2, plus the infinitive verb at the end of the sentence. Though German speakers often use the present tense plus a future time word (morgen), 'werden' is crucial for making predictions.

Infographic explaining the German Future I tense using 'werden' and the infinitive.

German has a "Future Tense", but we treat it like a fancy china set: We only use it for special occasions.
Most of the time, the Present Tense does the job.

  • Morgen gehe ich ins Kino. (Tomorrow I go to the cinema).
    • This is perfectly fine. The word "Morgen" makes it clear it's the future.

When do we use Future I?

We use it for:

  1. Predictions (Weather, Horoscope).
    • Morgen wird es regnen. (It will rain tomorrow).
  2. Promises / Intentions.
    • Ich werde dich immer lieben. (I will always love you).
  3. Assumptions about the Present! (Wait, what?).
    • Er wird schon schlafen. (He is probably sleeping right now / He will be sleeping).

The Formula 🧪

It works just like a Modal Verb structure.

Werden (Position 2) + ... + Infinitive (End)

  • Ich werde nächstes Jahr nach Deutschland reisen.
Person Werden (to become/will)
ich werde
du wirst
er/sie/es wird
wir werden
ihr werdet
sie/Sie werden

[!WARNING]
Don't confuse "Will" and "Will"!

  • English "I will" = German Werden.
  • German "Ich will" = English I want (Wollen).
This is a classic "False friend"!
  • Ich will ein Eis. (I want an ice cream).
  • Ich werde ein Eis essen. (I will eat an ice cream).

Future II (Futur II) — The Unicorn 🦄

There is also a Future II ("I will have done...").

  • Ich werde es gemacht haben.
You will almost never hear this in real life. It sits in dusty grammar books. Ignore it for now. Focus on Werden + Infinitive.

Common Mistakes ⚠️

  • "Will" vs "Werden": I can't stress this enough. If you say "Ich will Arzt werden", you are saying "I want to become a doctor." If you say "Ich werde Arzt werden", you are saying "I will become a doctor." Huge difference!
  • Word Order: Remember, the Infinitive MUST go to the end.
    • Ich werde essen Pizza (Wrong).
    • Ich werde Pizza essen (Correct).
