Compound Nouns — Can It Get Longer? 🌭📏
German is famous for combining multiple words into long compound nouns. The golden rule is simple: the grammatical gender and the plural form of a compound noun are always determined by its very last word. For example, das Haus + die Tür = die Haustür.

One of the superpowers of the German language is the ability to glue words together to create monster words.
In English, you say "The key for the door of the house."
In German, we say House-door-key (Haustürschlüssel). Efficiency! ⚡
The Golden Rule: The Last Part Wins! 🏆
You might be panicking: "If I combine three words, which gender do I use?"
Don't panic. The rule is simple: The LAST word determines the gender.
- die Donau (Danube river)
- der Dampf (steam)
- die Schifffahrt (shipping)
- die Gesellschaft (company)
- der Kapitän (captain)
Result: der Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän
Because the Last Word (Kapitän) is masculin (der), the entire word is masculin. The rest is just "adjectives" describing what kind of captain he is.
Examples 🧩
| Part 1 | Part 2 | Result | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| der Tisch | das Bein | das Tischbein | Table leg |
| die Orange | der Saft | der Orangensaft | Orange juice |
| das Haus | die Tür | die Haustür | Front door |
| die Hand | der Schuh | der Handschuh | Glove (Hand-shoe!) |
The Glue: Fugen-s and n 🔗
Sometimes you can't just smash words together; you need a little glue to make it sound nice.
This is often an -s, -n, or -en.
- Liebe + Brief = liebesbrief? No ➔ Liebesbrief (Love letter).
- Geburt + Tag = Geburtstag (Birthday).
- Student + Wohnheim = Studentenwohnheim (Student dorm).
[!TIP]
There are complex rules for when to use which glue (Fugen-laut), but honestly? It's often just about what sounds smoother. If you say Geburttag, you stumble. Geburtstag flows.
