Bevor is a subordinating German conjunction meaning 'before' (prior to). It introduces subordinate clauses (before X happens) and therefore sends the finite verb to the end of the clause. Use indicative for real events; after change of subject you must use a clause, not an infinitive with zu. Less formal counterpart: ehe.
