Indefinite Pronouns — Being Vague ☁️🤷

Indefinite pronouns refer to non-specific people, things, or quantities (someone, nothing, everything). Common German examples include jemand (someone), niemand (no one), etwas (something), and nichts (nothing). Some of these take declension endings, while others remain fixed.

Sometimes you don't know WHO did it. Or you want to be general.
"Someone ate the cake." "Nobody knows."

The Big Four 🍀

1. Jemand (Someone) / Niemand (No one)

Used for people.

  • Ist hier jemand? (Is anyone here?)
  • Hier ist niemand. (No one is here).

They can take endings (Jemanden, Niemandem), but in spoken German, we often leave them blank.

  • Ich sehe niemanden. (Accusative).

2. Etwas (Something) / Nichts (Nothing)

Used for things. They NEVER change form.

  • Ich möchte etwas essen.
  • Ich habe nichts gemacht.

3. Man (One/People)

The general "you/people/society".

  • Man darf hier nicht rauchen. (One is not allowed to smoke here).
  • Was kann man hier machen? (What can people do here?)

[!CAUTION]
Man vs Mann

  • Der Mann (The man) = Male human. 👨
  • man (one) = General pronoun. 🤷
Pronunciation is identical! Context tells the story.

4. Einer / Keiner (One / None)

Used to refer to countable nouns without repeating them.

  • Hast du einen Stift? (Do you have a pen?)
  • Nein, ich habe keinen. (No, I have none).
  • Ja, hier ist einer. (Yes, here is one).

Note how they pick up the gender of "Stift" (Masculine)!

  • Hast du eine Tasche? (Fem) -> Ich habe keine.
