To truly understand Germany, you have to realize it’s not just one big country—it’s a collection of 16 very different states, known as Bundesländer.

Just like the independent kingdoms we discussed in our history of dialects post, each state today has its own constitution, its own dialect, and its own deep sense of pride. Whether you’re looking for high-tech cities, medieval castles, or sandy beaches, there is a Bundesland for you.

Here is the alphabetical breakdown of Germany's 16 states, their capitals, and what makes them unique.

1. Baden-Württemberg

  • English Name: Baden-Württemberg
  • Capital: Stuttgart
  • Specialty: The land of "thinkers and tinkerers." It’s the home of the automobile (Mercedes-Benz and Porsche) and the stunning Black Forest (Schwarzwald).

2. Bayern

  • English Name: Bavaria
  • Capital: Munich (München)
  • Specialty: The most famous state globally. Known for the Alps, Oktoberfest, Neuschwanstein Castle, and the "Laptop & Lederhosen" lifestyle.

3. Berlin

  • English Name: Berlin
  • Capital: Berlin (City-State)
  • Specialty: Germany’s capital and its largest city. It’s a global hub for culture, history, and nightlife. It is a "Stadtstaat" (city-state), meaning the city is its own state.

4. Brandenburg

  • English Name: Brandenburg
  • Capital: Potsdam
  • Specialty: The state that surrounds Berlin. It is famous for its over 3,000 lakes and the beautiful Prussian palaces of Potsdam, like Sanssouci.

5. Bremen

  • English Name: Bremen
  • Capital: Bremen (City-State)
  • Specialty: The smallest state. It consists of two cities: Bremen and the port of Bremerhaven. It’s famous for the "Town Musicians of Bremen" fairy tale.

6. Hamburg

  • English Name: Hamburg
  • Capital: Hamburg (City-State)
  • Specialty: Germany’s "Gate to the World." A major port city with more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined. Known for its grit, its wealth, and the Elbphilharmonie.

7. Hessen

  • English Name: Hesse
  • Capital: Wiesbaden
  • Specialty: The financial heart of Europe. While Wiesbaden is the capital, Frankfurt is its biggest city. It’s also the region where the Brothers Grimm collected their fairy tales.

8. Niedersachsen

  • English Name: Lower Saxony
  • Capital: Hanover (Hannover)
  • Specialty: A land of horses and vast flat plains. It is home to the world-famous Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg and the beautiful Harz mountains.

9. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

  • English Name: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
  • Capital: Schwerin
  • Specialty: The "Land of a Thousand Lakes" and the Baltic Sea coast. Known for its white chalk cliffs on the island of Rügen and its stunning Hanseatic architecture.

10. Nordrhein-Westfalen

  • English Name: North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Capital: Düsseldorf
  • Specialty: Germany’s most populous state. It contains the industrial "Ruhr" area and the city of Cologne (Köln), famous for its massive cathedral and Karneval.

11. Rheinland-Pfalz

  • English Name: Rhineland-Palatinate
  • Capital: Mainz
  • Specialty: Wine country! It produces more wine than any other state. It’s also where you’ll find Trier, Germany’s oldest city with incredible Roman ruins.

12. Saarland

  • English Name: Saarland
  • Capital: Saarbrücken
  • Specialty: The smallest non-city state. It has moved between France and Germany several times in history, resulting in a unique culture and a love for French food.

13. Sachsen

  • English Name: Saxony
  • Capital: Dresden
  • Specialty: "Florence on the Elbe." Known for its incredible Baroque architecture, high-tech industry (Silicon Saxony), and the oldest Christmas market in Germany.

14. Sachsen-Anhalt

  • English Name: Saxony-Anhalt
  • Capital: Magdeburg
  • Specialty: The land of the Reformation. You’ll find the Luther cities of Wittenberg and Eisleben here, as well as the birthplace of the Bauhaus design movement in Dessau.

15. Schleswig-Holstein

  • English Name: Schleswig-Holstein
  • Capital: Kiel
  • Specialty: The land between the seas (The North Sea and the Baltic Sea). Known for its wind-swept islands, lighthouse scenery, and the massive Wacken Open Air metal festival.

16. Thüringen

  • English Name: Thuringia
  • Capital: Erfurt
  • Specialty: The "Green Heart" of Germany. It’s famous for its forests, its classic literature history (home of Goethe and Schiller), and—of course—the legendary Thuringian Bratwurst.
