Umlauts — The Happy Dots ̈😈

Umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) change both the sound and meaning of words. Ä sounds like the 'e' in 'let'. Ö is produced by shaping your lips for 'o' but saying 'ay'. Ü requires pouting your lips for 'u' but saying 'ee'. Never ignore them!

Infographic showing the pronunciation of German Umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) with examples.

German Umlauts (ä, ö, ü) are not just decorations. They completely change the sound—and the meaning—of a word. Schon means "already," but schön means "beautiful." You don't want to tell your date: "You look already tonight!" 😱

1. Ä (The "Eh" Sound)

Pronounce it like the "e" in "bed" or "head."

  • der Bär (the bear) — sounds like "Bear" in English.
  • spät (late)

2. Ö (The "Eurgh" Sound)

Make an "e" sound with your tongue, but round your lips like you're saying "o." It sounds a bit like the "i" in "bird" or "girl" (British accent helpful here! 🇬🇧).

  • schön (beautiful)
  • löffel (spoon)
  • Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral)

3. Ü (The Whistle Sound)

Make an "ee" sound (like "see"), but round your lips tightly like you are about to whistle.

  • müde (tired)
  • Übung (exercise)
  • München (Munich)
Letter Sounds like... Example
Ä / ä "Eh" Mädchen (girl)
Ö / ö "Err" (lips rounded) Möbel (furniture)
Ü / ü "Eee" (lips rounded) Grün (green)

💡 The "No Keyboard" Hack

If you can't type the dots, you are allowed to add an "e" after the letter.

  • ä = ae
  • ö = oe
  • ü = ue
Mueller is the same as Müller.

4. Tongue Twisters (Zungenbrecher) 🤪

Try these to train your mouth muscles!

The Ä-Challenge

Späht kämmen Käthes Mähne später.
(Kate's mane combs late later... okay, it makes no sense, but say it!)

The Ö-Challenge

Zehn Öle könnt ihr fröhlich löten.
(Ten oils you can happily solder).

The Ü-Challenge

Müller Lüllbeck wünscht rüstige Schüler.
(Miller Lüllbeck wishes for spry students).
