Diphthongs — When Vowels Team Up 👯‍♂️🎶

German diphthongs are vowel combinations that produce a single sound. The most vital rules: EI sounds like the word 'eye' (mein, sein), while IE just produces a long 'ee' sound (liegen, fliegen). EU and ÄU both sound like 'oy' (Deutsch, Häuser).

Infographic explaining German diphthongs (ei, ie, eu, etc.) and how to pronounce them.

A Diphthong is a fancy word for "two vowels that make one new sound." In German, these combinations are super consistent. Once you learn them, you can read almost anything! 📖

1. EI and AI (The "Eye" Sound) 👁️

Whenever you see ei or ai, pronounce it like the English word "eye" or "my."

  • mein (my)
  • nein (no)
  • Mai (May)
  • Arbeit (work)

[!TIP]
The Einstein Rule: Think of Einstein. It's pronounced "Eye-n-shtine."

2. IE (The "Eee" Sound) 🥶

When i and e swap places, it sounds like a long "eee" (as in "see").

  • Liebe (love)
  • Wien (Vienna)
  • Sie (you)
  • Bier (beer) 🍺

3. EU and ÄU (The "Oy" Sound) 🧸

Surprisingly, eu and äu sound like "oy" (as in "toy" or "boy").

  • Euro (Oy-ro)
  • Deutschland (Doy-tch-land)
  • Häuser (Hoy-zer - houses)
  • Freund (Froy-nd - friend)

4. AU (The "Ow" Sound) 🤕

Pronounce it like "ow" (as in "house" or "mouse").

  • Haus (house)
  • Maus (mouse)
  • blau (blue)
Pattern Sound Example (Pronunciation)
ei / ai Eye Eis (Ice)
ie Eee Knie (Knee)
eu / äu Oy Feuer (Foy-er - Fire)
au Ow Auto (Ow-to - Car)

5. Minimal Pairs Practice 🥊

The difference between ie and ei changes the meaning completely. Don't mix them up!

  • Wien (Vienna) vs. Wein (Wine) -> Don't drink the city!
  • bieten (to offer) vs. beissen (to bite) -> Be careful at business meetings.
  • Lied (Song) vs. Leid (Suffering) -> A sad mistake.

6. The Rare "UI" 🐷

You won't see this often, but it sounds like "oo-ee".

  • Pfui! (Yuck/Eww!) - Used for bad smells or bad dogs.
